Ange7894Ange7894@aol.comBioI've been drawing since I can remember, but the love for children's books didn't hit me until just a few years ago. After years of pursuing the wrong field, I finally discovered that illustration was where my true passion was. In college I took the children's book class and immediately found a love for the industry. Once I immersed myself in the world, I was astounded at how many beautifully illustrated books there were out there, and it was inspiring. Since graduating in 2005, I've continued pursuing the filed, and have done a few commissioned pieces. I have a few book ideas of my own that I'd like to see published one day, and I am continuing to update my portfolio with newer pieces.

C. Shana Gregershanagreger@bellsouth.netBio

Originally from CT, I earned my BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, incorporating an exchange to Parsons in New York, in 1980. I've been working as a professional artist since...I started out as a freelance illustrator for publishing, editorial and design markets- and did everything from computer graphics for the Bank of Boston, to exhibition graphics for museum design; op-ed illustration for the Boston Globe; courtroom drawing; figurines for Disney . . . to being an artist on an archaelogical dig in Jordan. By 1990, I had settled into children's trade and textbook illustration, and also began doing my own writing, focusing on multicultural and creation story themes.  I moved to New Mexico, drawn by multicultural elements and the landscape, which I wanted to paint. In 1995, I moved back east to North Carolina, where I have lived since. I show my current "Waterfall" paintings in Asheville's own, Blue Spiral 1 Gallery.  I also show my original illustrations and continue my book work, for children's books- and other book markets.  I have pursued  related fine arts projects- such as a Public Arts Commission to produce two 300 sq ft murals for the Children's Section of the new Greensboro Public Library (Vision Quest); a mural for the Greensboro Cultural Center followed. I enjoy the diversity of projects I take on...I am especially happy when my more "commercial work" mirrors my dedication to archetype and symbol, and appreciate the balance derived from working as both a painter and an illustrator.

cathy morrisoncathy@cathymorrison.comBioMy interest in drawing began about the same time I could tell a crayon from a cookie. I've always worked as an illustrator, first as an animator, then graphic designer and illustrator for editorial advertising and marketing. But now I've found my calling as a children's book illustrator and plan to live happily ever after. Most of my illustrations are drawn digitally on a Cintiq 21UX in Painter. Earlier historical fiction trade books are rendered in colored pencil. Much of my work for educational publishers is in watercolor creating an edgy, loose style for a fun and whimsical feeling. In either style my characters accurately portray a variety of ethnicity without being stereotypical. Books awards include three I-Parenting Media Awards, Children's Book Sense 76-Recommended List, Forward Magazine's Awards for Book of the Year, Independent Publisher Magazine's Juvenile Fiction Award, Parent's Choice Designation as "Outstanding. and a bronze medal for 2007 MoonBeam Children's Book Award." Whatever the project, my goal is to create art that inspires thought, evokes a smile, and serves a purpose. George Almondgeorgealmond@sbcglobal.netBioBorn on Cape Breton Island, Canada, George Almond created his first painting at the age of five, following a school field trip to the local zoo. The class having been assigned to choose their favorite animal and paint it, he chose a magnificent African elephant. Quite a challenge, not to be taken lightly ; the boy knew it would require careful analysis. Such a huge animal must have a sturdy skeleton to support its great mass, so he painted the skeleton first. It wasn't anatomically correct, of course; that knowledge lay ahead a few years-hey, nobody said he was a genius-so he constructed on paper an elephant-shaped system of beams and girders. Next he pictured the muscles, thick cables to move the great beast. Finally, he painted the skin and the wise, world-weary feral eyes. So was the origin of the perfectionism and attention to detail that has informed his work ever since. Having studied under the tutelage of such seasoned artists as Manuel De Leon, the noted anatomist, and Larry Brady, graphic designer to the J. Paul Getty Trust, he built a career as a freelance illustrator, serving such clients as The Cheesecake Factory, Knott's Berry Farm, Macmillan / McGraw Hill Publishing, Benchmark Education, Brain Worx Publishing, The Discovery Cube Science Center, Maya Cinemas, New World Computing, Computer Games Strategy Plus Magazine, The 3DO Company, The California Glass Association, The Classical Theatre Lab and Unknown Theatre, to name but a few. Today his work focuses mainly on children's book illustration. Mindful of the influence picture books were to his own childhood development, as a person as well as an artist, he considers his work to be not only a vocation but a deep trust, aiding and enhancing children's experience of learning. Finally, it only remains to say that George Almond has built a proven track record of superior artistic achievement on two principles: quality and efficiency, keeping as his motto: Can you imagine it? I can picture it!
George BanagisGeoBanagis@verizon.netBioGeorge is a retired US Army illustrator from Owosso Michigan. He now lives in the picturesque wine country of Niagara County New York with his wife of 33 years. His unique style blends the aged wisdom of pen and paper with the latest developments in digital media. His is a style that charms both young and old. His creations tantalize the imagination and pull the reader into the page. When he is not drawing new creations he is spending time with his grandchildren which are according to him, "his greatest creation".
Ginger Nielsongingerpixels@aol.comBioA graduate from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Education Ginger taught First Grade, Art and Remedial Reading before changing directions and spending the next few years as a travel agent. But in each career she always found herself using her art and illustrations as a tool. Newly transplanted to New England with her husband, she is now illustrating for the children's market and children's trade books full time. Her work is a mixture of traditional and digital media. Beginning with a sketch or simple painting the initial image gets scanned into the computer and the illustration is finished there. She uses a painting program that allows her to simulate actual brush strokes in a variety of media. This is still "painting" but it is so much less messy.

Although she has not had a published children's book, much of her work has child like themes, and she is working on some of her own manuscripts. She and her husband live on a lavender farm with sheep, donkeys, horses and goats - all end up up in one way or another in the little stories she writes and illustrates.

Laura Jacobsenlaura@laurajacobsen.comBioLaura received her B.F.A. in Illustration from the Columbus College of Art and Design in grey, wet Columbus Ohio. Upon graduation, she high-tailed it to the warm dry desert where she lives and works from her sunny studio. Laura has done illustrations for many clients; including, Cricket, Spider, Ladybug, Highlights for Children and High Five magazines, the educational divisions of Steck- Vaughn, Houghton Mifflin, Zaner Bloser, Scott Foresman, Scholastic, Rigby, Pearson, McGraw-Hill, Viking and Harcourt, and the publishers Pauline Books and Media and Boyds Mills Press.
Laura Loganlaura@lauralogan.comBioI am a freelance illustrator living near Austin, Texas, USA. I live here with my husband, son, and baby daughter. I use watercolor, pen and ink, colored pencil and the computer to make my artwork. I'm represented in children's publishing by Cornell & McCarthy (203) 454-4210.
laura nikiellgnikiel@verizon.netBioI love to paint with traditional watercolor to create colorful images for educational and children's publishing. I'm a graduate of Indiana State University (BA Communication Arts) and spent part of my career as an art director who could both design and illustrate. Since 2004 I've had the opportunity to devote my career to full time illustration, working in my studio in Florida. I live with my husband, son and my 2 boisterous Boxers, Haley and Beck.
Layne Johnsonlayne@laynejohnson.comBioI'm Layne Johnson and I've always loved adventure! And that's exactly what each new book is. A native Texan, I've drawn and painted just about everything! Being a children's book illustrator is also an adventure. I often ask kids if they know what an illustrator does. A kindergartener might say, "You write the pictures in books!" A third grader might say, "You draw the pictures in books!" But I say, "I bring books to life!" I don't draw or paint just what the words say. I draw what comes before the words, what's between the words, what comes after the words. It's my job to make the world of a book larger. I want the reader to "be there" in the book. And when they've taken the journey with me, to say, "Let's read it again!" Why do I do what I do? Because it's FUN! I'm still a kid at heart, so illustrating books for kids is my passion. And empowering children to draw and write is something I cherish — what could be better?! I earned my BFA from the University of Houston and have been a freelance illustrator for more than 25 years.
Leah Davisleah@leahdavisillustration.comBioLeah Davis earned a BFA in illustration with a minor in writing from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2000. She works primarily with batik, creating illustrations with wax and dyes on cotton muslin or japanese paper. Davis chooses batik because the "loose" process allows her to achieve a disctinctive look in her artwork. Inspirations include nature, love, and the unbelievable. Some of her favorite subjects include children, animals, nonsensical and sensical things, charming places, and crazy creatures.
LeanneFransoninkspots@videotron.caBioLeanne Franson lives in Montreal, Québec, where she illustrates children's books and textbooks in her home studio, surrounded by the hair from her two cats, her Saint-Bernard and her little boy Benjamin Taotao's toys and questions. She started working on books in French as well as English after moving to Francophone Canada from the Prairies, and is now learning Mandarin, Taotao's native language. She especially loves drawing animals, and feisty children having adventures, physical or emotional. She wouldn't give up her computer, but couldn't live without her actual pencil, paper and paintbrush!
Lee Calderonlee@leecalderon.comBioLee Calderon likes to think of himself as more of a visual storyteller, than just another illustrator. He enjoys bringing the little details in life to life. His work for the children's market is as whimsical and playful as it should be. Lee's work can best be described as :: fun, crazy, energetic, humorous, bold, colorful, wacky, sophisticated, design-y, slice of life, quirky, fresh, loveable, charming, happy, contemporary and appealing to a wide audience. That's why the little worlds that Lee creates is ideal for today's children's market and grown-up market, whether it's a picture book, advertising campaigns, retail, children's products, licensing, posters, tv spots, educational materials, on and on.

liz conradconradlp@bellsouth.netBioI was once told that my illustration "wasn't sophisticated enough" for editorial work. So rather than lose the bright, whimsical, textural style with a humerous flair that I had developed and loved, I found a very happy and comfortable home in the world of children's publishing....where I intend to stay for a long, long time! Inspired by my own children and animals, I try to bring a sense of joy, humor and a little mischievousness to each book I illustrate.

Marit Menzinmmenzin@verizon.netBioMy kindergarten teacher, Lia, discovered my talent for drawing. I attended many art workshops and I had an oil painter for a mentor while very young. I loved to read books and I also loved to write plays and poems for school. In college I majored in Biology and Chemistry. After a few fires and one suspected carbon monoxide leak at my graduate school laboratory, I decided that I had enough of chemical threats and hazards. I then studied computers and worked as a chemistry high school teacher, and as a computer programmer. As I pursued my scientific career, I continued to illustrate while studying different methods of painting. I participated in workshops, entitled How to Illustrate Children’s Books, at DeCordova museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. My mentor there was the acclaimed illustrator Ilse Plum. In the past 7 years, I have devoted my time to writing and illustrating. I developed my own unique style as a collage artist. My goal as a writer/illustrator is to teach young children through an intriguing story and captivating illustrations.
