The Plague Doctor

During the centuries that Europe contended with bubonic plague, doctors developed a type of haz mat suit to ward off the disease. The robe, hat, gloves and wand prevented contact with the patient. The beaked mask was filled with spice-infused rags to camouflage the smell of illness. In the background, a patient is being bled, one of the common treatments for the plague.
